Packing Tips
Whether moving a short or long distance, proper packing is your best insurance against damage. Packing can be a tedious, time consuming chore that takes skill and the right materials to complete properly. Please use some of our suggestions if you plan to do this yourself.
Use the Proper Materials
- Unprinted newspaper (Newspaper ink can soil and damage items)
- 2 inch plastic packing tape to assemble and seal boxes
- Permanent markers
- Scissors or utility knife
- Fragile stickers
Types of Boxes and Their Uses
2 Cubic Feet – Use for heavy or dense items including books, records, shoes, canned goods, kitchen canisters, small appliances, and hand or power tools
4 Cubic Feet – General purpose size. Good for toys, lampshades, pots, pans, kitchen utensils, etc.
Wardrobe boxes – Specially designed boxes for quick and easy transport of clothes
Dish Barrels – Specially designed boxes built extra strong for packing dishes
Mirror Boxes – Large and small sizes provide extra protection for mirrors, large pictures and glass tabletops
Items which must be Packed or Crated before Moving
- Marble, glass tabletops, heavy wall ornaments, mirrors 40" x 60" or larger
- Bulky, fragile items like large trophies, chandeliers, etc require crating
- Antiques
Things you should Move yourself
Cash, securities, firearms, jewelry and furs, personal papers and documents, coin and stamp collections, special family photographs.
General Packing Tips
- Disassemble any items that you can
- Insure items with sharp corners or projections are prevented from puncturing or scratching
- Reinforce the bottoms and tops of boxes with tape
- Pack one room at a time and label each box with room and contents
- Mark "Fragile" on top of all boxes containing fragile items
- Fill any unused space in boxes with paper or other filler to prevent shifting in transit
- Move houseplants, valuables, necessities, and specialty items yourself
- Get rid of items that you do not need before the move. Garage sales, consignment shops or charitable organizations are a great way of getting rid of unnecessary items
- Purchase actual moving boxes or at least find boxes of equal sizes to make packing the truck easier
- Wrap fragile items the way professionals do; use two layers of unprinted newspaper per glass, dish, figurine, etc. Wrap firmly, but loosely enough to provide a cushioning effect
- Don't overcrowd boxes. The top of the box should close with only slight pressure. Don't mix incompatible items like books and china
Personal Computers
To pack your computer we suggest that you use the computer's original carton and packing materials. If they are not available, use a box that is strong enough to hold it and pack it with unprinted newspaper. Back up your software and data files. Insert an old disk into the disk drive for transport. Unhook all cables and power cords, indicating their positions for easy set up. Pack cords separately with manuals and software. Use only static free packing materials like clean unprinted newspaper (do not use standard bubble wrap or packing peanuts). Create a base layer of wadded unprinted newspaper and place your computer on top of that layer. Then surround sides and top with more wadded unprinted newspaper until firmly packed. Remove all ink cartridges from the printer. Follow similar methods for all other household electronics.
Dishes and Glassware
Dishes and Glassware require special care in the packing process. We strongly recommend using the materials and methods of the moving companies. The primary materials are unprinted newspaper and dish barrels. Dish-Barrels are built strong to hold the weight of packed dishes. The first step in the packing process is to select a work area like a large tabletop and put your sheets of unprinted newspaper flat on the table. Each piece should be individually wrapped in two sheets of paper. Stand plates and similar larger items on edge and towards the bottom of the dish barrel. Cups and glasses should be filled with paper and should be placed standing up in the boxes. As you pack each layer of a box, used crumpled packing paper to assure a snug fit and to protect the bottom layers from those above. Place smaller, more breakable items towards the top. Leave a layer of crumpled paper at the top of the box. Do no overcrowd any of the boxes as they may need to be stacked in the moving truck. Mark all boxes containing dishes as fragile on the top of the box.
Lamps
Remove all bulbs and shades before packing into boxes. Pack in sturdy boxes and mark "Do Not Stack" on top of the box.
Wall Hangings
Wrap each painting or mirror with bubble wrap, blankets or towels. Load items into boxes on their edges, not flat. Label and mark box as fragile.
Garage Items
Drain all gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws and other equipment. Disconnect any batteries. Empty propane tanks from barbecue grill and properly purge hose.
Please do not pack items that could cause damage by means of combustion, leakage, or explosion
